I wonder about invisible barriers, distance and tensions that people experience in their psyche and position in space, as well as sensations and impulses that help ease or supplement these tensions. My work has recently been creating visceral wall hangings and floor sculptures with clay and fibers that literally play with tension and weight. The starting seed for this for this comes from how people with anxiety disorders sometimes sleep with weighted blankets because the weight of the blankets release a chemical in the body that helps calm them. It's interesting to me that you can feel weighted down by all your burdens yet some weight can help resolve certain stresses. These materials are ideal because of their need for process, flexibility and ability to be recycled that is like doodling in 3-d. I think that the act of making anything is even more important then the final product. I am fascinated by peoples urge to make things in a time where everything comes pre-made and digitized. I feel most related to and inspired by untrained artists, hobbyists and especially people that are obsessive with surrounding themselves in things that they have made. I hope my work has a mystical quality, experience, and power.
